Help answer the question about knee socks

What shoes to wear with over-the-knee socks?
I LOVE the newest styles of the over the knee and thigh-high socks, but I can't figure out what shoes to wear with them. I've been wearing boots, but it seems "too much" on the leg, ya know? I don't think they look good with tennis shoes either because I'm usually dressed up more than just tennis shoes can handle. (I like to wear my long socks with my short denim skirts). What do YOU wear with your longest socks? What do you think looks best?
